From Debbie’s Desk

As we enter our 31st year we have big plans for our Pantry and February is a busy month for the West Valley Food Pantry!
  1. We now have a truck! After years of depending on volunteers with trucks and SUV’s to help us pick up our food and donations, thanks to an incredibly generous donor from Prince of Peace Church, we have a beautiful white 2012 Chevy Silverado!  What a blessing! If you haven’t had the chance to see it, please feel free to press your nose to the window next time you’re in the parking lot…but be quick! It doesn’t sit still for long. Cecil and Santino can usually be seen entering or leaving in the pursuit of food!
Our goal is to put signage on it so we’ll be seen all over the west San Fernando Valley.

  1. Computers in the Pantry! Starting a couple of weeks ago, we began using our database in the Pantry to process our clients.  So far it’s only been in the afternoon, but we’ll be starting to use it in the mornings starting March 7th.
VOLUNTEERS, PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH THE PROCESS! This is a new program for us and we’re trying to make the transition as smoothly as possible. Getting from Point A to Point B is rarely a straight line. Over the next two months, unfortunately, we’ll be increasing the workload. BUT THEN the client cards will be retired and the process will be quicker and easier.Just imagine! No more searching for cards and no more alphabetizing.

IF you’d be interested in learning the computer process (It’s amazingly simple!!!) just contact me in the Pantry office or email me at I’d love to train you!!!

Again, please be patient while we grow and change for the better!
  1. We’re planning a Community Health Fair! For the first time the West Valley Food Pantry will be having a Health Fair on Saturday, June 4th. Please mark your calendars now. We’ll be sharing more information in the coming months.

  1. OPEN POSITIONS – Margaret Shively, Pantry Supervisor (and one of the Founders of the WVFP) has asked to retire after 31 years of service.  She is more than willing to train her replacements.  We will need TWO people to fill her shoes! We are splitting the job up so there’s not as much work. Please see me or Richard Podleski (Chairman of the Board) if you’d like to discuss/apply for this position. We also need someone to Chair the Postal Food drive in May.  That’s a one-time project and there’s lots of assistance available!

  • Assistant Buyer - Food Purchasing
  • Community Food Drive Coordinator
  • Board Secretary
February is the month of LOVE and I thank you for all the love, kindness and consideration you show our clients.  It’s our volunteers that make possible the work we do in feeding the hungry.

THANK YOU! <3 <3 <3

About the West Valley Food Pantry

The WVFP has over 200 volunteers serving about about 2-1/2 hours, 1 day a month. They purchase or take delivery of food shipments, stock shelves, validate client eligibility, maintain distribution records, shop for specials, buy and pick up food, as well as assist in the daily distribution.

We serve twelve zip codes that cover the West San Fernando Valley. Our efforts are made possible by the contributions of both food and money we receive from the local community and our coalition members. Donations are always welcome as we strive to insure that "No one goes away hungry".
